Our Artists in Residence

Music / Voice Artists

Eduardo Raon | Harpist

Although he has a classical harp education, Raon has always been unsatisfied with standing with both feet on the same recognizable ground. Contemporary, experimental, ethnic, noise, pop, retro, rock and electronic music are all part of a kaleidoscopic baggage brought by Eduardo Raon onstage. Either improvising, composing or interpreting and with a mixed attitude that oscillates between the visceral and the delicate/minute, his harp is squelched, stretched, melted, lit, consumed, blossomed, caressed.
He has frequently toured and recorded with I-Wolf, POWERTRIO, Maria João & Mário Laginha, Bypass, Ela Não É Francesa Ele Não É Espanhol, Hipnótica, O Espectáculo d'Ontem as well as solo. Besides Portugal he has performed in Germany, Austria, France, Slovenia, Serbia, Spain, Russia, Holland, Belgium and Macau (China).

As an interpreter he has premiered both solo and chamber works by Eurico Carrapatoso, Clotilde Rosa, Ivan Moody, João Lucas, Joana Sá, Daniel Schvetz, Eli Camargo, Sebastian Duh and Fernando Lobo.

Raon regularly composes for Cinema, Animation, Theater, Dance e Fine Arts projects.

In 2009 he was granted a grant by the Portuguese state for an international internship in Improvised Music/Neue Musik, working with Professor Paulo Álvares at the Hochschule für Musik Köln (GER).

More recently, he composed and performed live soundtracks at Slovene Kinoteka, for the following films:
- "L'Impossible" for Sylvain George's retrospective;
- a collection of Émile Cohl's animated films;
- "49 Flies" by Piérre Hebért;
- "Text of Light" by Stan Brakhage;
- "Die Puppe" by Ernst Lubitsch;
- "Metropolis" by Fritz Lang;
- "Enthusiasm - Symphony of the Donbass" by Dziga Vertov;
In late 2013, he made his solo debut with the album "The Drive For Impulsive Actions" released by the Lisboa based label SHHPUMA (powered by Clean Feed).

Andreas Böhmer such mit ausgeprägter Kreativität, Organisationstalent und Motivation in Kunst, Design und Musik auch in Gegengewicht zu seiner Ingenieursseite. Dan Tepfer | Pianist, Composer, Coder

One of his generation’s extraordinary talents, Dan Tepfer has earned an international reputation as a pianist-composer of wide-ranging ambition, individuality, and drive—one “who refuses to set himself limits” (France’s Télérama). The New York City-based Tepfer, born in 1982 in Paris to American parents, has performed around the world with some of the leading lights in jazz and classical music, and released ten albums of his own.

Tepfer earned global acclaim for his 2011 release Goldberg Variations / Variations, a disc that sees him performing J.S. Bach’s masterpiece as well as improvising upon it—to “elegant, thoughtful and thrilling” effect (New York magazine). Tepfer’s newest album, Natural Machines, stands as one of his most ingeniously forward-minded yet, finding him exploring in real time the intersection between science and art, coding and improvisation, digital algorithms and the rhythms of the heart. The New York Times has called him “a deeply rational improviser drawn to the unknown.”

Tepfer’s honors include first prizes at the 2006 Montreux Jazz Festival Solo Piano Competition, the 2006 East Coast Jazz Festival Competition, and the 2007 American Pianists Association Jazz Piano Competition, as well as fellowships from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (2014), the MacDowell Colony (2016), and the Fondation BNP-Paribas (2018).

Dan Tepfer lives in Brooklyn, NY. He loves improvisation, Bach, and algorithms.

LIOR | Singer/ Songwriter

Lior burst on to the Australian music scene in 2005 with his debut album - ‘Autumn Flow’. Recorded and released entirely independently, and spearheaded by the much loved opening track ‘This Old Love’. Subsequent singles ‘Daniel’ and the title track ‘Autumn Flow’ both secured high rotation airplay via the national broadcaster Triple J, and further cemented this album into the hearts of the Australian public. The album was released at a time when independently funded and released records were still a rarity, Lior being one of only a handful of artists paving the way for a model that is now deemed common place.

‘Autumn Flow’ achieved Platinum status and went on to become one of the most successful independent debuts in Australian music history. A swag of accolades followed, including three Aria nominations (including Best Male Artist), as well as Triple J’s prestigious ‘J Award’ nomination for Album of the Year.

Over the past decade, Lior has toured extensively both in Australia and internationally and has been a regular performer at WOMAD and art festivals around the world, including an entire season at the Edinburgh Festival. Alongside his own tours, Lior has also toured in collaboration with artists such as Melbourne vocal group ‘Invenio’ headed by Gian Slater, as well as several visual artists, string quartets and full symphony orchestras nationally. Lior is renowned for the exceptional quality of his live performances. A testament to this is that Carole King personally invited him to support her and James Taylor on their Australian tour in 2010. Aside from writing and releasing original albums, Lior has developed a keen interest in collaboration and diversification.

Steffi Kammermeier | Writer

The Swedish O’Nils | Trio– Singers, Musicians

ro.t (short for Rebecka O'Nils Trio) is a Swedish folk trio who perform original compositions to Swedish poetry from the 17th century and onwards. Their musical arrangements focus on advanced and unique vocal harmonies, inspired by a wide range of musical genres, including medieval and renaissance music as well as traditional Scandinavian folk music and hymns. The trio consists of Rebecka O'Nils, who composes the melodies, Jenny Klefbom, who composes the harmonies and of William Bülow O'Nils who arranges the songs for the guitar.

Their first album, Drömmarnas garn: dikter av Harriet Löwenhjelm, was released in September 2020. The album consists of original compositions for poems by the Swedish poet Harriet Löwenhjelm (1887-1918). Löwenhjelm was also a painter, and the album cover, as well as the covers of the singles from the album, are all paintings by her. During 2022, they are releasing new material with lyrics by Swedish poets from the 18th century, starting with their new single "Sång till natten" (Swedish for "Song to the night") by the end of January 2022.

The Petticoat Girls

The Petticoat Girls is an international ensemble founded by the singers Barbara Camille Tanze (Germany and Switzerland) and Rebeka Hren Dragolič (Slovenia) and the pianist Anna Franziska Reif (Germany and USA) in January 2013. Its goal is to promote classical music with a modern twist, a sense of humour while keeping the actual music to its highest quality.

The first programme „Sisters ....in love“, a concert tale of 3 sisters whose infatuation with the same men ultimately turns sour, has vast success in German and Slovene concert halls. A CD with several pieces of the concert was recorded in spring 2015. Newer programmes include „Around the world with the Petticoat Girls“, which included crossover repertoire as well as classical and folk songs and „Mignon and her composers“ aimed at shedding light on one of Goethe‘s most famous female character. The Petticoat Girls also adapt to the wishes and needs of the venue, offering concert programmes tailored to certain special needs like Embassy receptions, international conventions and charity concerts.

The petticoat girls are known to perform in petticoat style dresses (hence the name of the group) and using modern appliances like tablet computers and mobile phones in their stage performances in order to link the „good old times“ with the „ good less old times“ and finally our current time, for which the verdict has yet to be spoken.

It is the principal goal of this group to inject life into recitals of classical music, making it, what it used to be: a way of entertaining the ones who discover it for the first time and a way to enjoy beautiful melodies for those who are already familiar with them. Trying to offer the best possible interpretations of the music, but sometimes making small alterations without losing the respect for the composer. In a nutshell, giving the public a Petticoat experience!

Jimin Oh-Havenith

An exceptional sonority and fidelity owed to the text determine Jimin Oh-Havenith’s piano playing. Her warm sound, which is always embedded within the rhythmic structure, lets music come alive in all its richness. Synchronicity of sound and rhythm, not arbitrary changes in tempo and dynamics determine the clarity of her interpretation.

Jimin Oh-Havenith was born in Seoul, South Korea. After studying piano with Jin-Woo Chung (Seoul National University) and Aloys Kontarsky (Musikhochschule Köln) she performed as a soloist and recorded for radio and CD, also as a piano duo with her late husband Raymund Havenith (†1993). The pianist taught at the Hochschule für Musik Mainz and the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt am Main. Since 2013 she has been active again as a soloist and has recorded seven solo CDs.

Amir Fallah | Painter

Amir was born and grew up in Tehran. Art and design were always a part of family life - his mother was a decorator and costume designer and Amir was always surrounded by vibrant fabric, tools and materials. This indelible understanding of creating inspired him to abandon his math studies and win a place to study at Arts and Architecture University of Tehran, one of the most prestigious art universities in the Middle East at the time. Embracing the world, his life journey has taken him to Morocco and Germany and Sweden working in illustration, advertising and corporate identity.

Although he loves harmony, relativity and vitality in life, contrasts have been a constant theme in Amir’s life. As a child in times of war he experienced life on the edge where constant innovation was essential for survival; enduring censorship of expression during his university studies challenged him to find unorthodox ways to express concepts and ideas through art.

Wherever Amir goes, his sketchbook is with him. His artwork is complex, detailed often emotional, and sometimes dark and frightening for the viewer. His works express humanity: evoking the experience of life, ‘being’ human, and the human identity are always present.

Stefanie Schulte | Painter

Dr Stefanie Schulte was born in Bergisch Gladbach and grew up in Neuss, Germany. At the age of 21 she moved to Spain where she studied Fine Art in Barcelona and Madrid, graduating at Complutense University.

After the birth of her two children, she put her career on hold in order to fully focus on the young family, who was living in London at that time.

In 2015 the family moved to Australia and this move has been a new starting point to reengage with her creative work. Inspired by the Australian light and the colours it produces, she is now focusing on painting. She is interested in architectonic ideas within the two-dimensional space of the canvas and in the interaction between shades and layers of colours. Apart from the Arts, she likes languages and is currently learning her first non-european language, Arabic.

Petra Kleinherne | Painter

Petra Kleinherne was born in Germany and is now based in Melbourne, Australia.

She has lived in Freiburg, Hamburg, in the United States and London.

She holds a law degree from Freiburg University. Her involvement with painting started when she was working in Hamburg, but really gained traction after coming to Australia with her husband in 1981. Initially studying privately with the painters Peter Churcher and Yvonne Audette in Melbourne she involved herself in many artistic activities next to running a business with her husband and bringing up a family.

The Salzburg Summer Academy in figurative painting proved a turning point in 1998. She studied visual arts at Victoria University in Melbourne and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Monash University, Melbourne.

Petra Kleinherne’s paintings occupy a liminal space between figuration and abstraction. They hint at discernible scenes while carrying the viewer into the fluid and expressive potentialities of paint on canvas. The painting develops from colour and from the materiality of oil paint. Petra is fascinated by the process of painting and the unplanned spontaneous results.

She has shown in galleries in Melbourne and at the Goethe Institut Melbourne, both in solo and in group shows.

A short excerpt from the catalog, Recession: Gliptoteka HAZU | Galerija I. studeni - prosinac 2014. Zagreb.

... It is in this unique combination of Modern aesthetics and Postmodern experience, in the ambivalence caused by the need for construction and the simultaneous penchant for improvisation, the unpredictability and the constant evasion of rules and ultimate solutions, in the attempt to discipline his own personal style, that the driving force and the provocative thinking of the work of Goran Stimac lies; he is an artist who, by recycling waste and through the incessantly renewed pleasure in creation, by work with material and its substantiality and texture, reveals new meanings implicit in the poetics of the banal and a vast potential of expressive capacities of sculptural form as new paradigm of the art of the post-industrial age.
